Giacomelli summarised his abstract landscape photographs under the title "Presa di coscienza sulla natura" (On being aware of nature). While the early works were mostly taken from a hill, from the 1970s onwards he photographed from an airplane. His photographs dissolve the fields into graphic networks of lines and show the landscape as one marked by man and time, reminiscent of his many portraits of old people. Giacomelli certainly intervened in the shaping of the landscape and instructed the farmers to plough shapes into the ground according to his ideas. On the one hand an expression of personal feeling, the pictures also embody a clear, bold and conceptually pioneering attitude.

Giacomelli fasste seine abstrakten Landschaftsfotografien unter dem Titel "Presa di coscienza sulla natura" (Über das Bewusstsein der Natur) zusammen. Während die frühen Werke zumeist von einem Hügel aus entstanden, fotografierte er ab den 1970er Jahren aus einem Flugzeug. Seine Fotografien lösen die Felder in grafische Liniennetze auf und zeigen die Landschaft als von Mensch und Zeit geprägt, ähnlich seinen zahlreichen Porträts alter Menschen. Giacomelli griff sogar in die Gestaltung der Landschaft ein und wies die Bauern an, nach seinen Vorstellungen Formen in den Boden zu pflügen. Die Bilder sind einerseits Ausdruck persönlicher Empfindungen, verkörpern aber auch eine klare, kühne und konzeptionell wegweisende Haltung.
