Ren Hang's analogue photographs, taken with a simple 35mm film camera, which he always presented untitled and without date in his shows, tell of relationships and friendships or of fear and loneliness. Young women and men pose naked with animals and flowers as props. In unusual arrangements and poses, the bodies appear as something abstract, sculpturally formable. At once provocative and aesthetic, humorous and poetic, the artist, who died at an early age, reflected China's urban youth culture, which yearns for individual freedom and ideological liberty. OstLicht Gallery hosted the artist's first major exhibition in Europe in 2015, after which his work was widely received and acclaimed. The poster book published to coincide with the exhibition at the OstLicht gallery quickly sold out and is now a sought-after collector's item.

Ren Hangs analoge Fotografien, die er mit einer schlichten Kleinbildkamera aufnahm und in Ausstellungen stets ohne Titel und Datum präsentierte, erzählen von Beziehungen und Freundschaften oder von Angst und Einsamkeit. Junge Frauen und Männer posieren nackt mit Tieren und Blumen als Requisiten. In ungewöhnlichen Arrangements und Posen wirken die Körper abstrakt, fast skulptural. Zugleich provokant und ästhetisch, humorvoll und poetisch, spiegelte der früh verstorbene Künstler die urbane Jugendkultur Chinas wider, die sich nach individueller und ideologischer Freiheit sehnt. In der Galerie OstLicht fand 2015 die erste umfangreichere Ausstellung des Künstlers in Europa statt, in Folge wurde sein Werk weitläufig rezipiert und gewürdigt.
