After moving to Innsbruck, the Dresden doctor Heinrich Kuehn became one of the most important representatives of Pictorialism. In still life, he was able to realise his photographic ideals in the best possible way, as the arranged motif could be controlled and precisely adjusted to the lighting situation. In conjunction with his special interest in positive development and the effect of different papers, Kuehn achieved the reproduction of a broad and at the same time differentiated spectrum of tonal values, as an abstract correspondence to the real variety of colours and light moods. The still life with tomatoes on a tin plate is one of his most successful motifs in this genre, in which the light reflections on the various surfaces are particularly appealing.

Nach seinem Umzug nach Innsbruck wurde der Dresdner Arzt Heinrich Kühn zu einem der bedeutendsten Vertreter des Piktorialismus. Im Stillleben konnte er seine fotokünstlerischen Ideale optimal umsetzen, da das arrangierte Motiv kontrollierbar und präzise auf die Lichtsituation abstimmbar war. In Verbindung mit seinem ausgeprägten Interesse an der Positiventwicklung und der Wirkung verschiedener Papiere, erreichte Kühn die Wiedergabe eines breiten und gleichzeitig differenzierten Tonwertespektrums, als abstrakte Entsprechung der realen Vielfalt an Farben und Lichtstimmungen. Das Stillleben mit Tomaten auf einem Zinnteller zählt zu seinen gelungensten Motiven dieses Genres, in dem die Lichtreflexionen auf den verschiedenen Oberflächen besonders reizvoll zur Geltung kommen.
