Vintage silver print, with the original mounting board of 21,5 x 27,5 cm, this impressing and extremely rare vintage print is in never restored original condition with silvering around the face of Klimt. It comes with a beautiful contemporary frame made of mahogany with inlet (80 x 63 cm)

Ab der Jahrhundertwende verbrachte Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) seine Sommerfrische viele Jahre am Attersee im Salzkammergut. Hier entstand 1904 eine Porträtserie auf einer Rasenfläche vor Bäumen, wovon sich vier Kontaktabzüge in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek erhalten haben, die Klimt Foundation hält drei weitere Motive der Serie auf Kollodiumpapier. Der Fotograf wurde von der Forschung bislang nicht identifiziert, Moriz Nährs Urheberschaft steht zur Diskussion. Das hier angebotene frontale Brustbild ist ein Detail einer Aufnahme dieser Serie, das auch als Postkarte abgezogen ¬wurde – überliefert ist ein Autograf mit Zeilen an seine Mutter. Im vorliegenden, äußerst seltenen Print ist der Fokus auf den konzentrierten Blick des damals 42-jährigen Malers durch die Aussilberungen in den Randzonen reizvoll gesteigert. Der originale Untersatzkarton und das Bromsilberpapier belegen die frühe Datierung des Abzuges, der prächtige, zeitgenössische Rahmen in restauriertem Zustand war vermutlich nicht von Beginn an Teil des Ensembles.

From the turn of the century onwards, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) spent many years summering at Lake Attersee in Austrian Salzkammergut. Here, in 1904, a series of portraits was taken on a lawn in front of trees, of which four contact prints have been preserved in the Austrian National Library, the Klimt Foundation holds three further motifs on collodion paper. The photographer has not yet been identified, Moriz Nähr’s authorship is under discussion. The frontal portrait offered here is a detail from a photograph of this series, which was also printed as a postcard – an autographic writing to his mother has survived. In the present, extremely rare print, the focus on the concentrated gaze of the then 42-year-old painter is charmingly heightened by the silvering in the marginal zones. The original backing board and the bromide silver paper attest to the early date of the print; the splendid contemporary frame in restored condition was probably not part of the ensemble from the beginning.
