Alfons Walde is internationally renowned for his paintings of snowy landscapes and winter sports scenes, which fetch high prices on the art market. However, his passion for photography, which he discovered before the First World War, remained largely unknown until the 2014 exhibition at WestLicht. The exhibition catalogue and especially the limited-edition print run, were so well received that individual images from it are now rare. Vintage prints, like the ones offered here, are extremely hard to find on the art market. Walde's focus was on the female nude – classical poses from the art historical tradition alternate with provocative, playful stagings that sometimes border on the pornographic. Comparisons with drawings and paintings show that Walde used Agfa's then-new colour film and the Leica as a photographic sketchbook for his painting. Above all, however, it is about the pleasure of looking itself – the photographs are not only artistic preliminary studies, but also erotic foreplay.

Alfons Walde wird international geschätzt für seine Gemälde verschneiter Landschaften und Wintersportmotive, die am Kunstmarkt hohe Preise erzielen. Bis zur Ausstellung 2014 im WestLicht kaum bekannt war jedoch seine Leidenschaft für die Fotografie, die er vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg entdeckte. Der anlässlich der Ausstellung herausgegebene Katalog und vor allem die in kleiner Auflage produzierte Printedition wurden so gut angenommen, dass einzelne Motive daraus mittlerweile rar sind. Besonders selten und am Kunstmarkt kaum erhältlich sind Vintageabzüge, wie die hier angebotenen. Waldes Fokus lag auf dem weiblichen Akt – klassische Posen der kunsthistorischen Tradition wechseln mit provokanten, spielerischen Inszenierungen, die bisweilen pornografisch anmuten. Vergleiche mit Zeichnungen und Gemälden zeigen, dass Walde den damals neuen Farbfilm von Agfa und die Leica als fotografisches Skizzenbuch für seine Malerei nutzte. Vor allem aber geht es ihm um die Freude am Betrachten selbst – die Fotografien sind nicht nur künstlerische Vorstudien, sondern auch erotisches Vorspiel.
