When Winogrand published his photo book "Women Are Beautiful" in 1975, at the height of the feminist movement, he presented a document of the changing social landscape and the spirit of women in public spaces during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Yet his radical snapshot aesthetic was shocking at the time: He photographed women in unobserved – not always favourable – moments, often in the midst of movement, talking, smoking or eating. In the book's introduction, he writes, "Whenever I've seen an attractive woman, I've done my best to photograph her. I don't know if all the women in the photographs are beautiful, but I do know that the women are beautiful in the photographs." The 2014 Winogrand retrospective at WestLicht was named after this important project.

Als Winogrand 1975, am Höhepunkt der Frauenbewegung, seinen Fotoband "Women Are Beautiful" veröffentlichte, dokumentierte er den Wandel der Gesellschaft und das Selbstverständnis der Frauen im öffentlichen Raum der späten 1960er und frühen 1970er Jahre. Seine radikale Schnappschussästhetik schockierte damals: Er fotografierte Frauen in unbeobachteten – nicht immer vorteilhaften – Momenten, oft mitten in Bewegung, beim Sprechen, Rauchen oder Essen. In der Einleitung schreibt er: "Immer wenn ich eine attraktive Frau sah, habe ich mein Bestes gegeben, sie zu fotografieren. Ich weiß nicht, ob alle Frauen auf den Fotos schön sind, aber ich weiß, dass die Frauen auf den Fotos schön sind." Die Winogrand-Retrospektive 2014 im WestLicht trug den Titel dieses wichtigen Projektes.
