During the First Vietnam War from 1945 to 1954 the nationalists under Ho Chi Minh fought for the independence of South Vietnam against the French, who ruled the protectorate of Indochina. The country was then divided up, with Ho Chi Minh ruling in the north. In the French-ruled south, Bishop travelled from outpost to outpost through the Red River Delta commissioned by the magazine "Paris Match" in 1952.
