Due to flooding and drought, in 1951 the province of Bihar in India was heavily stricken by famine. The US sent 136 million tons of wheat and a 190 million dollar loan, while the USSR sent 50.000 tons of wheat. Bischof photographed the starving population and the distribution of relief supplies in April 1951. His photo essay appeared in Life magazine in May and was his first major international success, subsequently a number of his pictures – like this one – were taken over by other magazines.

Aufgrund von Überschwemmungen und Dürre wurde die indische Provinz Bihar 1951 von einer schweren Hungersnot heimgesucht. Die USA schickten 136 Millionen Tonnen Weizen und ein Darlehen von 190 Millionen Dollar, während die UdSSR 50.000 Tonnen Weizen schickte. Bischof fotografierte die hungernde Bevölkerung und die Verteilung von Hilfsgütern im April 1951. Seine Reportage erschien bereits im Mai in der Zeitschrift Life und war sein erster großer internationaler Erfolg, in Folge wurde eine Reihe seiner Bilder – wie auch dieses – von weiteren Zeitschriften übernommen.
