So porträtierte er auch Rauchende, die beinahe hinter Wolken des blauen Dunstes verschwinden. In diesem Porträt nimmt Georges Braques (1882–1963) eben einen Zug an seiner Zigarette, deren Rauchschwaden den halben Bildraum verschleiern – umso mehr liegt der Fokus auf dem Handrücken im Gegenlicht sowie auf dem Blick, den der Maler weit Bild-auswärts richtet, während eine Lesebrille markant auf seiner Stirn sitzt. Cartier-Bresson betont damit den Charakter des bedächtigeren der beiden Hauptvertreter des Kubismus – jener Kunstrichtung, in der Multiperspektivität und eine analytische Umsetzung des Gesehenen zentral sind. Cartier-Bresson’s masterful aesthetic is evident not only in what his photographs reveal, but also in what they leave invisible. Thus he occasionally portrayed smokers who almost disappear behind clouds of blue haze. In this portrait, Georges Braque (1882-1963) is taking a puff of his cigarette, the clouds of smoke obscuring half the picture space – all the more reason to focus on the back of his hand against the light and on his gaze, which the painter directs far out of the picture, while reading glasses sit prominently on his forehead. Cartier-Bresson thus emphasises the character of the more deliberate of the two main representatives of Cubism – the art movement in which multi-perspectivity and an analytical transformation of the visible are central.
