Heinz Cibulka developed his distinctive photographic form in 1974 when he created his first "image poems" from four landscape-format color prints arranged in a rectangle. Key influences on this concept were his collaboration with the Viennese Actionists (as a model for the first group and the preferred photographer for later actions) and the montage techniques of the film and literary avant-garde. Cibulka uses the photographic image as a repository of immediate experience; the four-image arrangement creates a "fifth image" characterized by a subtle balance of correspondences and contrasts between the individual prints, encouraging an associative reading process. Since the early 1980s, Cibulka has expanded his explorations to include cities such as Vienna, Berlin, Rome, Naples, Antwerp, Warsaw, New York, and Tokyo. This important group of works from his oeuvre was brought together for the first time in the exhibition at WestLicht in 2011.

Seine spezifische fotokünstlerische Ausdrucksform entwickelte Heinz Cibulka 1974, als er die ersten Bildgedichte aus vier im Rechteck angeordneten quer-formatigen Farbabzügen schuf. Wichtige Impulse für dieses Konzept waren seine Zusammenarbeit mit den Wiener Aktionisten (als Modell der ersten und bevorzugter Fotograf späterer Aktionen) sowie die Montageverfahren der filmischen und literarischen Avantgarde. Cibulka nutzt das fotografische Bild als Speicher unmittelbarer Erfahrung, mit der Vierer-Konstellation entsteht ein "fünftes Bild", das sich durch eine subtile Balance aus Korrespondenzen und Kontrasten zwischen den Einzelbildern auszeichnet und in der Betrachtung zu einer assoziativen Lesearbeit angeregt. Seit Beginn der Achtzigerjahre erweiterte Cibulkas seine Erkundungen auf Städte, etwa Wien, Berlin, Rom, Neapel, Antwerpen, Warschau, New York und Tokio. Diese wichtige Werkgruppe seines Œuvres wurde 2011 im WestLicht erstmals als Werkgruppe ausgestellt.
