W.G. Horton worked as a photographer during the Great War, then as a press photographer employed by "The Times" and for the British Royal Family. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he became the official photographer for the War Office under Winston Churchill. From 1940 onwards, many of his photographs of the Prime Minister appeared in the daily newspapers; in August 1941, for example, he accompanied Churchill to the secret Atlantic Conference with President Roosevelt. This photograph shows Churchill during a visit to the 2nd US Armoured Division on Salisbury Plain with the American self-loading rifle "M1 Carbine", 23 March 1944. The agency label on the reverse has been lost, but research by the renowned auction house Spink proves Horton's authorship (www.spink.com/lot/18003000443).

W.G. Horton arbeitete bereits im Ersten Weltkrieg als Kriegsfotograf, danach als angestellter Pressefotograf bei "The Times" sowie für das britische Königshaus. Bei Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde er offizieller Fotograf des Kriegsministeriums unter Winston Churchill. Ab 1940 erschienen zahlreiche seiner Aufnahmen vom Premierminister in den Tageszeitungen; im August 1941 begleitete er etwa Churchill zur geheimen Atlantikkonferenz mit Präsident Roosevelt. Die vorliegende Aufnahme zeigt Churchill während eines Besuchs bei der 2. US-Panzerdivision auf der Salisbury Plain am 23. März 1944 mit dem amerikanischen Selbstladegewehr "M1 Carbine". Das Agenturlabel auf der Rückseite des Abzugs ging zwar verloren, allerdings ist die Urheberschaft Hortons durch Nachforschungen des renommierten Auktionshauses Spink belegt (www.spink.com/lot/18003000443).
