Born in Tokyo, the artist worked as an assistant to photographer Hiroshi Hamaya in the early years of his career. Through him, Kubota made the acquaintance of Magnum members Elliot Erwitt, René Burri and Burt Glinn, whose errand boy and translator he was on their visit to Japan in 1961. Erwitt's gift of Henri Cartier-Bresson's book "Images à la Sauvette" inspired Kubota so much that he decided to move to America the following year, where he continued to run in Magnum circles, becoming a freelance photographer in 1965. He became a Magnum Photos associate in 1971 and eventually a full member in 1989. His work mainly includes images of America and Asia. Between 1979 and 1984, Kubota documented China during a 1,000-day tour of the country.
