Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (1919-2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. Together with the Nepalese mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa, he succeeded in climbing Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth, on May 29, 1953. He was the first climber confirmed to have reached the summit.
