Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1970s on double-weight matte paper 50.5 x 40.2 cm, in very good condition. Signed, titled "Che", and dedicated "Para Norka con gran amor" in ink by the photographer in the lower margin. This unique early, rare and exceptionally large print dedicated to his muse and wife Norka was purchased directly from Norka in 2006.

Korda's iconic portrait of the 20th century was the centerpiece of the 2008 exhibition "Che Guevara: The Cult Image of a Generation." This exhibition intensified Peter Coeln's interest in Cuban photography from the decades immediately before and after the revolution. The OstLicht photo collection now houses over 3,500 prints, of which approximately 600 depict Che Guevara and roughly twice as many Fidel Castro. The legendary portrait of Che was taken at a memorial event where Fidel Castro delivered a passionate speech. The previous day, 95 people had been killed in the explosion of a freighter carrying Belgian munitions; with the CIA suspected of sabotage, Castro began to seek closer ties with the USSR. Korda photographed the dignitaries on the podium when Che Guevara, standing in the background, briefly stepped forward, resulting in two successful shots. The unparalleled popularity of this portrait reached its peak only after the revolutionary's death, primarily in the form of posters; genuine vintage prints are not available. All prints made directly from the negative during Korda's lifetime are now highly sought-after collector's items – this one is very early and unusually large-format. The photographer dedicated the valuable print to his muse and wife Norka, from whom it was purchased directly in 2006.

Kordas Ikone des 20. Jahrhunderts stand 2008 im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung "Che Guevara. Ches legendäres Porträt entstand anlässlich einer Gedenkveranstaltung, bei der Fidel Castro eine leidenschaftliche Rede hielt. Am Vortag waren 95 Menschen bei der Explosion eines Frachters mit belgischer Munition ums Leben gekommen; da man die CIA der Sabotage verdächtigte, begann sich Castro an die UdSSR anzunähern. Korda fotografierte die Prominenten auf dem Podium, als Che, der im Hintergrund stand, kurz vortrat und zwei Aufnahmen gelangen. Die unvergleichliche Verbreitung dieses Porträts erreichte ihren Höhepunkt erst nach dem Tod des Revolutionärs in Form von Postern; Vintageabzüge im engeren Sinne sind nicht erhältlich. Alle zu Kordas Lebzeiten direkt vom Negativ angefertigten Abzüge sind heute begehrte Sammlerstücke – der vorliegende ist sehr früh und ungewöhnlich großformatig. Der Fotograf widmete den wertvollen Print seiner Muse und Ehefrau Norka, von der er 2006 direkt erworben wurde.
