Two vintage silver prints on single-weight, semi-matte / glossy paper, one mounted on cardboard 20 x 24 cm, both in very good condition. "Associated Press" agency stamp, handwritten note "Lakehurst NJ.", publication date stamp "Jul 5 - 1936" and newspaper text clip / agency caption labels on the reverse.

"An aerial view of the Lakehurst air station, New Jersey, showing the German Zeppelin 'Hindenburg', being towed into its hangar after spanning the Atlantic ocean in a record flight of a little over sixty hours. Ocean crossings of the huge Teutonic dirigible are dependent on weather reports and expert navigation today, just as master seamen made speedy voyages of the Yankee clippers of another day possible. Zwei Vintage-Silbergelatineprints auf dünnem, halbmattem / glänzendem Papier, ein Print montiert auf Karton 20 x 24 cm, beide in sehr gutem Zustand. Rückseitig jeweils Agenturstempel "Associated Press", handschriftlicher Vermerk "Lakehurst NJ." mit Bleistift, Publikations-Datumsstempel "Jul 5 - 1936" und Zeitungsausschnitt / Agenturtext-Labels.

In den späten 1920er-Jahren wurde Lakehurst als internationaler Flughafen für die kommerzielle Luftfahrt bekannt. Es war der einzige Landeplatz für deutsche Luftschiffe in Amerika. Die beiden Fotografien vom 9. Mai 1936 machen die gigantischen Ausmaße des Hangars deutlich, neben dem die Verwaltungsgebäude wie Puppenhäuser wirken. Sie wurden nach dem ersten von zehn geplanten Rundflügen zwischen den beiden Nationen aufgenommen. Je nach Wetter benötigte man für eine Strecke etwa drei Tage, den ersten Flug absolvierte man in der Rekordzeit von rund sechzig Stunden.
