In February 1956, David Douglas Duncan first met Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), and their friendship continued until the death of the renowned visual artist. Instead of staging spectacular scenes, Duncan photographed the artist in the company of his friends and in moments of creative intimacy, being as quiet as possible. "I was just a guy he liked, a guy with a camera. (...) It's important to emphasise that I wasn't an artist, and that's what he expected of me," said Duncan. The two offered photographs show a visit of LIFE magazine photographer Gjon Mili, a technical prodigy and lighting innovator. He had realized "light drawings" with Pablo Picasso in 1949 that visualized the artist's brush strokes as light streaks swirling through space.

Im Februar 1956 traf David Douglas Duncan erstmals Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), deren folgende Freundschaft hielt bis zum Tod des bedeutenden bildenden Künstlers. Anstatt spektakuläre Szenen zu inszenieren, fotografierte Duncan den Künstler im Kreise seiner Freunde und in Momenten kreativer Intimität, wobei er so leise wie möglich war. "Ich war einfach ein Mann, den er mochte, ein Mann mit einer Kamera. (...) Es ist wichtig zu betonen, dass ich kein Künstler war, und genau das erwartete er von mir", sagte Duncan. Die beiden angebotenen Fotografien zeigen einen Besuch des Fotografen Gjon Mili vom Magazin LIFE, eines technischen Wunderkinds und Lichtpioniers. Er hatte 1949 mit Pablo Picasso "Lichtzeichnungen" angefertigt, die die Pinselstriche des Künstlers als durch den Raum wirbelnde Lichtstreifen visualisierten.
