In 1961, the year Koudelka got a degree in engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague, he staged his first photographic exhibition. Between 1962 and 1971, he travelled throughout Czechoslovakia and rural Romania, Hungary, France and Spain photographing Romani people. Koudelka would travel for the project, "carrying a rucksack and a sleeping bag, sleeping in the open air, and living frugally" to follow their nomadic lifestyle. His now legendary photo book on the series "Gypsies" (1974) earned him the membership at Magnum agency.
