Photographer's “Foto Sudek, Praha III, Újezd 20” stamp on the reverse.

Josef Sudek began his professional career as a trained bookbinder. In 1913 he completed his apprenticeship in Prague as a journeyman. In 1914 Sudek began to privately practice photography. In 1915 he was called up for military service; in 1917 he lost his right arm on the Italian front in Udine. After his return to Prague he was not able to pursue his profession as a bookbinder, for which he had trained for. This contact print is a particularly early example of his photographic art and can be understood as a charming hint of his original profession.
