Gisèle Freund took up photography in the late 1920s and was given a Leica as a graduation present, which had a decisive influence on her documentary style. The street scene on display dates from the same year as her flight from the Nazis to Paris in 1933, where she financed her exile and her sociology studies through photographic commissions. She gained international recognition for her sensitive photo-essays and portraits of the artistic elite.

Gisèle Freund begann Ende der 1920er Jahre mit der Fotografie und erhielt zum Schulabschluss eine Leica, die ihre dokumentarische Arbeitsweise entscheidend prägte. Die gezeigte Straßenszene stammt aus demselben Jahr wie ihre Flucht vor den Nationalsozialisten 1933 nach Paris, wo sie sich mit fotografischen Aufträgen ihr Exil und ihr Soziologiestudium finanzierte. Mit einfühlsamen Reportagen und Porträts der künstlerischen Elite erlangte sie internationale Anerkennung.
