Although Julia Margaret Cameron only began taking photographs at the age of forty-eight, she is one of the most important pioneers of artistic photography. Even during her lifetime, she was celebrated for her pictures of allegorical or literary figures, which she staged in her studio on the Isle of Wight, mostly with models from her circle of family and friends. Her effective use of blurring and strong contrasts of light, which gave her portraits an unmistakable expression, was also soon appreciated. Her niece Julia Jackson (1846–1895), who perfectly embodied the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty of the time, was photographed by Cameron several times. This portrait was taken in April 1867, shortly before Jackson's marriage to Herbert Duckworth, and exists in two versions, distinguishable by a thin, sharply drawn strand of curls at the temple, which this print also shows. Here, Jackson is presented as vulnerable and delicate – in contrast, profile pictures taken after the wedding emphasise the noble severity of her features, which she later passed on to her daughter Virginia Woolf, who came from her second marriage. From around 1865 onwards, Cameron had her works distributed by the traditional and renowned art gallery "Colnaghi" in central London, and a corresponding blind stamp can be found on the original cardboard. The print with authentic signature, original retouching and a patina that shows the unmistakable signs of Cameron's characteristic practice is an exceptionally rare collector's item.

Obwohl Julia Margaret Cameron erst im Alter von achtundvierzig Jahren zu fotografieren begann, zählt sie zu den bedeutendsten Pionierinnen künstlerischer Fotografie. Bereits zu Lebzeiten wurde sie für ihre Bilder allegorischer oder literarischer Figuren gefeiert, die sie in ihrem Studio auf der Isle of Wight, meist mit Modellen aus ihrem Familien- und Bekanntenkreis, inszenierte. Außerdem schätzte man schon bald ihren effektvollen Einsatz von Unschärfe und starken Licht-Kontrasten, der ihren Porträts einen unverwechselbaren Ausdruck verlieh. Ihre Nichte Julia Jackson (1846–1895), die dem Präraffaelitischen Schönheitsideal der Zeit perfekt entsprach, fotografierte Cameron mehrfach. Das vorliegende Porträt entstand im April 1867, kurz vor Jacksons Hochzeit mit Herbert Duckworth, und existiert in zwei Varianten, unterscheidbar an einer dünnen, scharf gezeichneten Lockensträhne an der Schläfe, die auch dieser Abzug aufweist. Hier wird Jackson verletzlich und zart gezeigt – dagegen betonen nach der Hochzeit entstandene Profilbilder die edle Strenge ihrer Züge, die sie in ihrer zweiten Ehe auch Tochter Virginia Woolf vererben sollte. Ab etwa 1865 ließ Cameron ihre Werke durch die traditionsreiche Galerie "Colnaghi" im Zentrum von London vertreiben, ein entsprechender Blindstempel befindet sich auf dem Untersatzkarton. Der Abzug mit authentischer Signatur, originaler Retusche und einer Patina mit unverkennbaren Zeichen der für Cameron so typischen Praxis, ist ein außerordentlich seltenes Sammlerstück.
