Ferdinand Schmutzer's photographic work was discovered by WestLicht founder Peter Coeln shortly before the museum's opening in 2001. Thousands of negatives and original prints by the artist, renowned for his portrait etchings, were stored in his villa in Vienna. He was commissioned by the German and Austrian imperial families to create portraits. He also portrayed a large segment of Austrian intellectual society, including Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, and many other prominent figures. Until the 2001 exhibition at WestLicht, it was unknown that photographs of his subjects served as models for his portrait etchings. Only through WestLicht's processing of his photographic work did his great talent as a photographer become apparent. The large-format negatives are now held by the Austrian National Library, while the vintage prints are owned by the City of Vienna.

Das fotografische Werk Ferdinand Schmutzers war eine Entdeckung von WestLicht Gründer Peter Coeln kurz vor Eröffnung des Museums. Tausende Negative und Originalabzüge des für seine Portraitradierungen berühmten Künstlers waren in seiner Villa in Wien gelagert. Er wurde vom deutschen und österreichischen Kaiserhaus beauftragt, Porträts anzufertigen. Auch porträtierte er einen großen Teil der österreichischen intellektuellen Gesellschaft, darunter Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein und viele andere Persönlichkeiten. Bis zur Ausstellung 2001 im WestLicht war nicht bekannt, dass Fotografien seiner Modelle als Vorlagen für seine Porträtradierungen dienten. Erst durch die Aufarbeitung seines fotografischen Werkes durch WestLicht wurde sein großes Talent als Fotograf sichtbar. Die großformatigen Negative befinden sich heute im Besitz der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, die Vintage-Prints im Besitz der Stadt Wien.
