After establishing herself in Vienna as a leading portrait photographer, Madame d'Ora moved to Paris in the 1920s, where she became one of the most sought-after photographers of fashion and society. She portrayed aristocrats, artists, and international personalities, including figures from the worlds of haute couture and entertainment. After the Second World War, having experienced the profound changes of the time, she turned away from glamour photography and began exploring socially engaged subjects. The present work belongs to her important slaughterhouse series of the 1950s, marking a dramatic and deeply humanistic transformation within her oeuvre.

Nach ihrer erfolgreichen Tätigkeit als Porträtfotografin in Wien übersiedelte Madame d'Ora in den 1920er-Jahren nach Paris, wo sie zu einer der gefragtesten Fotografinnen der Mode- und Gesellschaftsfotografie avancierte. Sie porträtierte Aristokraten, Künstler und internationale Persönlichkeiten aus der Haute Couture und Unterhaltungsbranche. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und den tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen der Zeit wandte sie sich von der Welt des Glamours ab und widmete sich zunehmend sozialen Themen. Die vorliegende Arbeit gehört zu ihrer bedeutenden Schlachthof-Serie der 1950er-Jahre und markiert eine eindrucksvolle, zutiefst humanistische Wendung innerhalb ihres fotografischen Schaffens.
