Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1980s on double-weight matte paper 33 x 25.5 cm, in excellent condition. Photographer's credit stamp "L.E. Berka" in blue ink, signed and titled in pencil on the reverse.

Berka initially focussed on the theory of film and photography and published relevant articles. From 1928 to around 1933, he also worked as a photographer, orientating himself on the current trends of the avant-garde, as this photograph of celluloid cinema-film shows. Exposed film frames can be seen on the two tightly rolled-up sections, while the loosely unrolled part in the image diagonal, on which his focus lies, is completely transparent - it was therefore exposed to light as a whole and would appear black on the screen when projected. Berka thus thematises the technical conditions of the media of film and photography.

Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet in den 1980ern auf kartonstarkem, mattem Papier, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Rückseitig Fotografenstempel "L.E. Berka" mit blauer Tinte sowie betitelt und signiert vom Fotografen mit Bleistift.

Berka beschäftigte sich zunächst theoretisch mit Film und Fotografie und publizierte einschlägige Artikel, bevor er von 1928 bis etwa 1933 auch als Fotograf tätig war; dabei orientierte er sich an den aktuellen Strömungen der Avantgarde, wie auch die vorliegende Aufnahme von Zelluloid-Kinofilm zeigt. Auf den beiden dicht aufgerollten Teilen sind belichtete Filmkader erkennbar, während jener locker entrollte Teil in der Bilddiagonale, auf dem sein Fokus liegt, vollständig transparent ist – er war also als Ganzes dem Licht ausgesetzt und würde bei der Projektion schwarz auf der Leinwand erscheinen. Damit thematisiert Berka technische Voraussetzungen der Medien Film und Fotografie.
