The Landsat program is a continuous global record of Earth observations from space. On July 23, 1972 NASA launched the first satellite in this program, then known as ERTS, the “Earth Resources Technology Satellite” and later renamed “Landsat 1”, being in service until 1978. It was launched from an Air Force Base in California and carried a multispectral scanner (MSS) for obtaining information on agricultural and forestry resources, geology and mineral resources, hydrology and water resources, geography, cartography, environmental pollution, oceanography and marine resources, and meteorological phenomena. The MSS was designed by Virigina Norwood, called “the mother of Landsat”. Research interest was initially focused on the cartographic record of the US East Coast, where this photograph is most likely to be located. A very decorative and rare print.

Das Landsat-Programm unternahm eine kontinuierliche globale Aufzeichnung der Erdoberfläche aus dem Weltraum. Am 23. Juli 1972 startete die NASA den ersten Satelliten dieses Programms, der damals den Namen ERTS (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) erhielt, später in "Landsat 1" umbenannt wurde und bis 1978 in Betrieb war. Er wurde von einem Luftwaffenstützpunkt in Kalifornien aus gestartet und trug einen Multispektralscanner (MSS) zur Erfassung von Informationen über land- und forstwirtschaftliche Ressourcen, Geologie und Bodenschätze, Hydrologie und Wasserressourcen, Geografie, Kartografie, Umweltverschmutzung, Ozeanografie und Meeresressourcen sowie meteorologische Phänomene. Das MSS wurde von Virigina Norwood entwickelt, die als "Mutter von Landsat" bezeichnet wird. Das Forschungsinteresse konzentrierte sich zunächst auf die kartografische Erfassung der US-Ostküste, wo auch diese seltene und dekorative Aufnahme lokalisierbar ist.
