František Drtikol was a pioneering Czech photographer whose early work combined Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Pictorialism with a strong interest in the expressive potential of the nude body. Around 1912–13, he developed his distinctive nude studies, characterized by carefully posed figures, dramatic lighting and sculptural compositions.

František Drtikol war ein bedeutender tschechischer Fotograf, dessen frühes Werk Symbolismus, Art Nouveau und Piktorialismus mit einem ausgeprägten Interesse an der expressiven Wirkung des Aktes verband. Um 1912–13 entwickelte er seine charakteristischen Aktstudien, die sich durch sorgfältig inszenierte Figuren, dramatische Lichtführung und skulpturale Kompositionen auszeichnen.
