From 1961 on Barbey worked on the cycle "The Italians" on his own account. This ambitious project, trained on Robert Frank, opened the doors to the Magnum agency for the young photographer. It shows his talent in the search for a documentary strategy apart from classical reportage and captures the spirit of Italian culture in daily life.
