Wegman, who was known primarily for conceptual video work and small-format black and white photography, was invited by the Polaroid Corporation in 1979 to use their newly developed 20x24 inch camera. Not really convinced, he went to Boston and took his first colour photos of his Weimaraner dog Man Ray. The ironic stagings in large format, which he created in series from then on, made him one of the most famous representatives of post-modern photography. In 1986, four years after Man Ray's death, Wegman got a new dog of the same breed and named her Fay Ray, and she became a star of his photos as well. With her descendants, he worked with Polaroid's 20x24 inch camera until the company stopped producing films in 2007.

Wegman, der damals vor allem an konzeptuellen Videoarbeiten und kleinformatiger Schwarzweiß-Fotografie arbeitete, wurde 1979 von der Polaroid Corporation eingeladen, ihre neu entwickelte 20x24-Zoll-Kamera zu verwenden. Wenig überzeugt, fuhr er nach Boston und machte seine ersten Farbfotos von seinem Weimaraner-Hund Man Ray. Die ironischen Inszenierungen im Großformat, die er von da an in Serien schuf, machten ihn zu einem der bekanntesten Vertreter der postmodernen Fotografie. 1986, vier Jahre nach Man Rays Tod, bekam Wegman eine Hündin der gleichen Rasse und nannte sie Fay Ray, und auch sie wurde zu einem Star seiner Studioaufnahmen. Mit ihren Nachkommen arbeitete er mit der Großkamera von Polaroid, bis das Unternehmen 2007 die Produktion der Filme einstellte.
