A passer-by reads newspaper pages pinned to a building wall, with dramatic shadows falling across the same wall. The image captivates with its careful composition and, at the same time, its immediacy. Elliott Erwitt achieves this combination through formal precision, specifically through doubling and the skillful framing. During his long career he took numerous photographs in the Seine metropolis, where he had been born to Russian-Jewish parents. When Erwitt was eleven years old, the family left Paris and immigrated to the USA. There he became a photographer and full member of Magnum in 1953. The offered print was produced for one exhibition "Paris Sera Toujours Paris" at the Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo.

Ein Passant liest an einer Hauswand affichierte Zeitungsseiten, auf dieselbe Wand fallen dramatische Schatten. Die Komposition besticht durch eine sorgfältige Komposition sowie gleichzeitiger Unmittelbarkeit. Dies zu verbinden, gelingt Elliott Erwitt mittels formaler Präzision, konkret durch Verdopplung und die gekonnte Kadrierung des Bildausschnitts. Im Laufe seiner langen Karriere schoss er zahlreiche Fotos in der Metropole an der Seine, wo er als Sohn russisch-jüdischer Eltern zur Welt gekommen war. Als Erwitt elf Jahre alt war, verließ die Familie Paris und wanderte in die USA aus. Dort wurde er Fotograf und 1953 Vollmitglied von Magnum. Der hier angebotene Druck wurde für die Ausstellung "Paris Sera Toujours Paris" in der Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokio angefertigt.
