Das Porträt von Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) wurde vom Originalnegativ geprintet, in größerem Format als dasselbe Motiv im Mappenverband (Los 15). Das Bildnis wurde zum 70. Geburtstag des Psychoanalytikers von seinen Schülern in Auftrag gegeben. In einem Brief schrieb Freud am 10. Mai 1926 an Schmutzer: „Meine Freunde und Angehörigen bewundern das Porträt entweder auf den ersten Anblick oder sie finden es zuerst zu streng, um dann nach längerer Betrachtung zuzugeben, dass es mir immer ähnlicher wird. Mir macht die Wiedergabe meines garstigen Gesichts eine ungemeine Freude und ich fühle mich erst jetzt als aufbewahrt für die Nachwelt.“

The portrait of Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) was printed from the original negative, in a larger format than the same motif in the portfolio (Lot 15). The image was commissioned by his students for the psychoanalyst’s 70th birthday. In a letter to Schmutzer on 10 May 1926, Freud wrote: “My friends and relatives either admire the portrait at first sight or at first find it too severe, only to admit after a longer contemplation that it looks more and more like me. I take immense pleasure in the reproduction of my nasty face and only now feel that I have been preserved for posterity.”
