Bei der Arbeit an seinen Fotobänden über Wien fand Hubmann visuelle Formeln für die Mythen, Narrative und Attribute der Stadt, etwa in verblassenden Relikten ihrer imperialen Geschichte oder morbiden Zwischentönen in Gemütlichkeit und Weinseligkeit. Dem Kaffeehaus als Wiener Institution, die den engen Kreisen des kulturellen Lebens eine semi-öffentliche Heimat bot, setzte er mit seiner legendären Hawelka-Reportage ein bleibendes Denkmal.

Working on his photo books about Vienna, Hubmann found visual formulas for the city’s myths, narratives and attributes, for example in fading relics of its imperial history or morbid overtones of “Gemütlichkeit” (cosiness) and wine bliss. With his legendary Hawelka photo essay, he set up a lasting monument to the coffee house as a Viennese institution that offered a semi-public home to the narrow circles of cultural life.
