Schwarzenbergplatz appears as empty as during a lockdown in a photograph by Josef Löwy, in which moving objects are only vaguely recognisable. When he photographed the then still new square facing Kärntner-Ring about a century and a half ago, there was of course neither car traffic nor tram lines running here. The equestrian monument to Karl Philipp Prince Schwarzenberg is in the shade, on the left edge of the picture is the palace for the railway industrialist Viktor Ofenheim Ritter von Pontreuxin; opposite in the sunlight is the palace for Archduke Ludwig Viktor, today’s casino, next to it the palace for Eduard Wiener von Welten and the management of the Staats-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, completed in 1869.

Leer wie im Lockdown zeigt sich der Schwarzenbergplatz in einer Aufnahme von Josef Löwy, in der bewegte Objekte nur schemenhaft erkennbar sind. Als er vor etwa anderthalb Jahrhunderten den damals noch neuen Platz mit Blickrichtung Kärntner-Ring fotografierte, gab es freilich weder Autoverkehr noch verliefen hier Straßenbahnstrecken. Das Reiterdenkmal Karl Philipp Fürst zu Schwarzenberg liegt im Schatten, am linken Bildrand steht das Palais für den Eisenbahnindustriellen Viktor Ofenheim Ritter von Pontreuxin; gegenüber im Sonnenlicht das Palais für Erzherzog Ludwig Viktor, das heutige Kasino, daneben das 1869 fertiggestellte Palais für Eduard Wiener von Welten und die Direktion der Staats-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft.
