Diese Ikone des 20. Jahrhunderts entstand anlässlich einer Gedenkveranstaltung, bei der Fidel Castro eine leidenschaftliche Rede vor Tausenden Anwesenden hielt. Am Vortag waren 95 Menschen bei der Explosion des mit belgischer Munition eingelaufenen Frachtschiffes „La Coubre“ umgekommen, und man vermutete eine Sabotage der CIA. Das Ereignis war ein wichtiger Schritt im Prozess von Castros Annäherung an die UdSSR und damit ein Schritt hin zur Kubakrise von 1962, und letztlich auch für Ches spätere Abkehr von der kubanischen Politik. Korda fotografierte für die Zeitschrift Revolución die Prominenz auf der Rednertribüne, als der etwas im Hintergrund stehende Che Guevara kurz vortrat und ein Hoch- und ein Querformat gelangen. Der Höhepunkt der unvergleichlichen Verbreitung dieses Porträts, eines Details aus dem Querformat, setzte erst nach dem Tod des Revolutionärs in Form von Plakaten ein, Vintageprints im engen Sinne sind nicht erhältlich. Alle noch zu Lebzeiten Kordas direkt vom Negativ gezogenen Prints, erkennbar am Kratzer im Bereich des Sterns, gelten heute als gesuchte Sammlerstücke. Der hier angebotene Abzug trägt neben dem Printdatum auch Kordas eigenhändige Widmung, die Ches legendären Abschiedsgruß in seinem letzten Brief an Fidel Castro im Jahr 1965 zitiert.

This icon of the 20th century was created on the occasion of a commemorative event at which Fidel Castro gave an impassioned speech to thousands present. On the previous day, 95 people had died when the freighter “La Coubre”, carrying a shipment of Belgian ammunition, exploded; the CIA was suspected of sabotage. The event was an important step in the process of Castro’s rapprochement with the USSR, leading up to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and ultimately for Che Guevara’s later renunciation of Cuban politics. Korda photographed the celebrities on the rostrum for the magazine Revolución when Che Guevara, who was standing somewhat in the background, briefly stepped forward and a portrait and landscape format were achieved. The peak of the incomparable circulation of this portrait, a detail from the landscape format, only began after the revolutionary’s death in the form of posters; vintage prints in the narrow sense are not available. All prints made directly from the negative during Korda’s lifetime, recognisable by the scratch in the area of the star, are today considered sought-after collector’s items. In addition to the print date, the print offered here also bears Korda’s personal dedication, which quotes Che’s legendary farewell in his last letter to Fidel Castro in 1965.
