As one of Japan's most important landscape photographers, Toshinobu documented the various areas of his homeland in as untouched a state as possible, so to speak as it were before the influence of mankind. In addition to the terrains, the flora and the forces of nature in all their pictorial intensity, the change of the seasons – particularly pronounced in Japan – is also a vital part of his work.

Als einer der bedeutendsten Landschaftsfotografen Japans dokumentierte Toshinobu die verschiedenen Regionen seines Heimatlandes in einem möglichst unberührten Zustand, sozusagen vor dem Einfluss des Menschen. Neben den Landschaften, der Flora und den Naturgewalten in ihrer ganzen bildhaften Intensität ist auch der Wechsel der Jahreszeiten – der in Japan besonders ausgeprägt ist – ein wesentlicher Bestandteil seiner Arbeit.
