German-born actress and singer Marlene Dietrich (1901–1992) achieved her international breakthrough in the movie "The Blue Angel", directed by Josef von Sternberg in 1930. He introduced her to Hollywood under contract to Paramount Pictures and there they made more films together, as "The devil is a woman" in 1935. Especially in Paramount's movies and promotional portraits Dietrich appears in perfectly arranged poses and lighting; combined with scrupulous attention to set design and costumes. Eugene Robert Richee was a pioneer of glamorous studio portraiture in the era of classic Hollywood cinema and worked for Paramount Pictures since 1921. He used props made of glass or mirrors, which gave his shots a sparkling sheen that matched the studio's image of elegant sophistication.
