View of the Graben in Vienna's city center towards the east, where until 1866 a group of houses at the level of Dorotheergasse formed a closure towards Stock-im-Eisenplatz. The two-gabled "Elefantenhaus" bears the inscription of the pharmacy "Zur goldenen Krone" as well as "Caffeehaus und Restauration". It is named after a relief, which already no longer existed at the time of the photograph, commemorating the first elephant ever seen in Vienna, which Maximilian II had brought in his cortege in 1552, supposedly passing through Grabengasse.

Blick auf den Graben in der Wiener Innenstadt gegen Osten, wo bis 1866 auf Höhe der Dorotheergasse eine Häusergruppe einen Abschluss zum Stock-im-Eisenplatz hin bildete. Das zwei-giebelige "Elefantenhaus" trägt die Aufschrift der Apotheke "Zur goldenen Krone" sowie "Caffeehaus und Restauration". Es ist benannt nach einem Relief, das schon zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme nicht mehr existierte, und an den ersten jemals in Wien gesehenen Elefanten erinnerte, den Maximilian II 1552 in seinem Tross mitgeführt hatte, wobei er angeblich durch die Grabengasse gekommen war.
