Since 1831 David Welsh (1793–1845) was Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Edinburgh University, where he gave a new start to the discipline with his stimulating and well-attended lectures. As one of the leaders of the newly formed "Free Church of Scotland", he demitted his post and became the first Professor of Ecclesiastical History at New College in 1843. When Robert Adamson (1821–1848) and David Octavius Hill (1802–1870) began their photographic collaboration, he was among the first sitters.

David Welsh (1793–1845) war von 1831 bis 1843 Professor für Kirchengeschichte an der Universität von Edinburgh, wo er als anregender Vortragender seinem Fach zu neuer Aufmerksamkeit verhalf. Er zählte zu den prominentesten Mitgliedern der 1843 gegründeten Freikirche Schottlands, deren New College er beitrat, um fortan hier zu lehren. Als Robert Adamson (1821–1848) und David Octavius Hill (1802–1870) ihre fotografische Zusammenarbeit begannen, war er unter den ersten Porträtierten.
