In the 19th century Shanghai had the largest number of foreigners in China, about half of whom were British. Within a couple of years of declaring Shanghai as a treaty port in 1842, they had already a racecourse up and running. The famous Shanghai Race Club and its track were established in the centre of the International Settlement by 1862. In addition to the races, which were also perceived as social cultural events, the British cultivated the early photographic practice of having prized horses ""portrayed"" in front of the stables.
