The iconic portrait series of Che Guevara was taken during an interview for Newsweek in Havana. In 1964 Elliott Erwitt first went to Cuba on commission for the news magazine. At the invitation of Fidel Castro he was allowed stay in Havana as one of very few American journalists, at a time when American citizens were not permitted to enter Cuba.
