Since the early 1970s, Vienna-born video artist and filmmaker Friederike Pezold has made the female body the main theme of her works. These three montages show fragments of her video installation Neue leibhaftige Zeichensprache (New Bodily Sign Language). Therein the artist presents in sequences sections of her body (Augenwerk, Mundwerk, Bruststück und Schamwerk) (Eye Factory, Mouth Factory, Breast Factory, and Pubic Factory). Through strong contrasts, segmentations and abstractions, the female body thus becomes a symbolic sign language. The aim of this work was to create a counter-image to sexualized representations and it is not without reason that they are internationally regarded as pioneering works of feminist video and photographic art.
