Von etwa 1967 bis 1971 widmete sich Alfons Schilling der Linsenrasterfotografie, mit der er die spezifischen Bedingungen menschlicher Wahrnehmung und ihrer medialen Transformation untersucht. Sein besonderes Interesse lag dabei auf den Aspekten von Perspektivität und Bewegung. Die zugrundliegenden Aufnahmen fotografierte Schilling bei den Straßenunruhen anlässlich des Parteikonvents der Demokraten Ende August 1968 in Chicago. Auf dem Parteitag wurde ein Befürworter des Vietnamkriegs, Hubert Humphrey, zum Präsidentschaftskandidaten und Herausforderer von Richard Nixon nominiert. Das brutale Vorgehen gegen die Demonstranten wurde in den Medien mit der Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings wenige Tage zuvor verglichen, um die Chicago Riots hielten sich bis heute zahlreiche Mythen. Fragen der Perspektive und Weltanschauung sind also auch auf inhaltlicher Ebene virulent. Schilling visualisiert die Ereignisse in einem komplexen Gemenge im Bildraum, in dem sich mehrere Aufnahmen überlagern und bei geringfügigem Wechsel des Blickpunktes jeweils mehr oder weniger in den Vordergrund treten; besonders eindrücklich hier eine liegende Demonstrantin, die nach einer Tränengas-Attacke der Polizei verarztet wird.

From around 1967 to 1971, Alfons Schilling devoted himself to lenticular photography, with which he investigated the specific conditions of human perception and its medial transformation. He was particularly interested in the aspects of perspectivity and movement. Schilling photographed the underlying images during the street riots on the occasion of the Democratic Party Convention in Chicago at the end of August 1968. At the party convention, a supporter of the Vietnam War, Hubert Humphrey, was nominated as the presidential candidate and challenger to Richard Nixon. The brutal crackdown on protesters was compared in the media to the suppression of the Prague Spring a few days earlier, and numerous myths persist around the Chicago Riots to this day. Questions of perspective and Weltanschauung are thus also virulent at the level of content. Schilling visualises the events in a complex mixture in the pictorial space, in which several shots overlap and, with a slight change of viewpoint, each comes more or less into the foreground; particularly impressive here is a lying demonstrator who is being treated after a tear gas attack by the police.
