Vintage silver print on double-weight matte paper, in good condition. Che Guevara's handwritten dedication in blue ink "Para la familia Boti con saludos revolucionarios Che" (engl.: With revolutionary greetings to the Boti family, Che) in the image, photographer's stamp "foto JULIO BELLO Havana Cuba", stamp "Propriedad de Regino Boti" and annotated "Ernesto Che Guevara 1928–1967" by an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse. Enclosed certificate of authenticity on Che's autograph.

On the one hand, this lot is exceptional due to the rare handwritten dedication to the family of Harvard-educated economist Regino Boti (1923–1999). He was Minister of Economy in the first cabinet of Cuba's revolutionary government. His area of responsibility was therefore closely related to Guevara's agenda, who was appointed by Castro in September 1959 as Minister of Industry and then as head of the Cuban Central Bank. Like Boti, Che worked on the nationalisation of the Cuban economy and the development of heavy industry; the two were also united by their commitment to agrarian reform and their critic on America's policy towards Latin America. On the other hand, this portrait is reminiscent of Alberto Korda's icon of the "Guerrillero Heroico" (taken c. four months later), in which Che wears the same beret, beard and hairstyle. Bello's photograph, however, shows the legendary revolutionary less prophetic and serious than charming and approachable; while Korda's legendary tele shot only became enormously popular after Che's death in 1967, Bello's portrait was already very popular at the time it was taken and was reproduced in many formats. The fact that it was taken by Julio Bello, as documented here with a stamp, is hardly known – because while Korda photographed Che many times over the course of his career, there is only this one shot of Bello. He made a name for himself primarily as a fashion and nude photographer, who is associated with the virtuosity of his lighting design, the harmonious reproduction of the human body and perfection in darkroom work.

Außergewöhnlich ist dieses Lot zum einen aufgrund der seltenen handschriftlichen Widmung an den in Harvard ausgebildeten Ökonom Regino Boti (1923–1999). Dieser war im ersten Kabinett der Revolutionsregierung Kubas Wirtschaftsminister. Sein Zuständigkeitsbereich stand somit im engen Zusammenhang mit Guevaras Agenden, der von Castro im September 1959 als Industrieminister und danach als Leiter der kubanischen Zentralbank eingesetzt wurde. Wie Boti arbeitete Che an der Verstaatlichung der kubanischen Wirtschaft und dem Aufbau von Schwerindustrie; die beiden einte auch ihr Einsatz für die Agrar-Reform und ihre kritische Haltung gegenüber der amerikanischen Lateinamerika-Politik. Zum anderen erinnert dieses Porträt an Alberto Kordas (etwa vier Monate danach aufgenommene) Ikone des "Guerrillero Heroico", auf der Che dieselbe Baskenmütze und Haartracht trägt. Bellos Aufnahme zeigt den legendären Revolutionär aber weniger prophetisch-ernst, als charmant und nahbar; während Kordas legendäre Teleobjektiv-Aufnahme erst nach Guevaras Tod 1967 seine enorme Verbreitung fand, war Bellos Porträt bereits zur Entstehungszeit sehr beliebt und wurde in vielen Formaten reproduziert. Dass es von Julio Bello stammt, wie hier mit einem Stempel belegt, ist dagegen kaum bekannt – denn während Korda im Laufe seiner Karriere Che vielfach fotografierte, findet sich von Bello nur diese eine Aufnahme. Er machte sich vor allem als Mode- und Aktfotograf einen Namen, den man mit der Virtuosität seiner Lichtregie, der stimmigen Wiedergabe des menschlichen Körpers sowie mit Perfektion in der Dunkelkammerarbeit assoziiert.
